OVERVIEW & OBJECTIVE
Each palm in an oil palm plantation is a revenue-generating unit. Therefore, it is crucial that planting materials that are sourced from nursery and planted
in fields are of superior quality. Although area wise nursery is small in size, it houses large densely populated seedlings at the juvenile stage needing great
care and expertise in order that it produces uniformly strong and healthy planting materials realising large oil yields for 25 years or more.

Therefore, good establishment and upkeep of nursery are of paramount importance. Apparently, not all estate personnel have experience in nursery practices. Those who had worked in new development projects would have acquired knowledge and experience in this specialized segment. It cannot be overemphasized
that personnel void of experience but being tasked to charge of nursery duties receive adequate training in all aspects of nursery set up and operating practices.

OVERVIEW AND OBJECTIVE

The planting industry in Malaysia was dominated by rubber since 1900 and around 1960 onwards massive expansion of oil paIm had taken place. In recent years crude oil palm oil (CPO) price has plunged to Iow IeveI triggering the industry players and the government to explore the cultivation of other suitable crops to cushion fall in commodity prices.

-> Gaharu or agarwood (AquiIaria) can be a good choice in an eVort for crop diversiłcation.  This plant is native to Southeast Asia. commercial planting on smaII scale only began in 2000 to 200t  in  MaIaysia.  Other  than  pIanting  in  gentIe  unduIating terrains, this crop can be planted in hilly terrains for maximization of Iand use as experience has shown this pIant thrive weII in hiIIy areas too.

Development and inocuIation costs for gaharu are huge but it pays back with high return of investment (ROI) per unit of Iand. Gaharu venturing requires speciaI expertise in certain speciłc areas nameIy vegetative, tissue cuIture propagation and inocuIa- tion of mature tree for resin forming. Therefore, it is essentiaI that personneI invoIved in undertaking this project shouId acquire the necessary knowIedge and skiIIs before undertaking this project.

WORKSHOP ON CASH CROPPING WITH DURIAN CULTIVATION

MR.VINCENT CHOW KOK KOW
DATE
18-19 AUGUST 2020

VENUE
SELANGOR FRUIT VALLEY
KM 7, Jalan Batang
Berjuntai – Rawang
45600 Bestari Jaya,
Selangor Darul Ehsan

OBJECTIVE
The Workshop on Cash cropping has been planned to assist durian growers as well as those interested in backyard and hobby gardening. With the current high price placed on tropical fruits, it would make economic sense to ride on the increasing demand for local short-term species like papaya, banana, pineapple, and other tropical fruits. Durians grown from seeds are known to have a long juvenile period and grafting has been able to shorten this period of waiting to 5-6 years when the trees begin fruiting. However, the owner or investor still has to bear the costs of maintenance and care of the young durian plants during the non-productive years, even when the maturity has been shortened. Moreover, as durians trees are planted at wide spacing, e.g. 12m x 12m, space in-between the rows would be left vacant and weed control would require both financial and labor inputs. A better approach would be better to grow cash crops on the available space of the inter-rows as long as time and the absence of shading factor permit. Hence, it could be possible, to a certain extent, to derive some income from cash cropping to help lessen the maintenance costs of the young grafted durian seedlings for at least 3-4 years. If the venture is well-managed, there could be some profit for the project owner. The workshop is to assist owners of young durian orchards to how best to harness the available land and time to grow short term tropical fruits or a mix of these with a fruit vegetable. All factors of growth, problems, and solution for the duration of the cash crop will be covered. There will be ample opportunities for all to be an inactive discussion with our invited speaker, Mr. Vincent Chow, the well-known American trained consultant Agriculturist, and Horticulturist. Topics covered will include planning, land preparation to harvesting. The importance of post-harvest technology that will dictate the final grade reaching the buyer/ middleman as well as the price offered will also be discussed.
