INTRODUCTION

Oil palm-based activities, products, and services that interact with
the environment is referred to as “aspects”, which may have a negative or positive impact on the environment. Typically, aspects might include emissions to air, discharges to water, and waste arising, which in turn may generate environmental and health impacts such as global warming, water pollution, or contaminated land. Some activities, such as those of an office-based service, will have relatively minor environmental impacts, such as energy used and emissions linked to air conditioning. Whereas some heavy operational aspects such as processes that cause emissions to air and discharges to water may have significant environmental impacts. Managing environmental aspects and impacts is arguably the most important component of an environmental management system. This topic explains how to identify environmental aspects and related impacts and provides useful methods for determining relative significance in terms of risks to the environment. It also explains how to compile a register of significant aspects and impacts. Social impact assessment (SIA) is the process of identifying and managing the social impacts in oil palm plantation (estate and mill). It can also be applied to policies, plans, and programmes. SIA is used to predict and mitigate negative impacts and identify opportunities to enhance benefits for local communities and broader society

ISP HEADQUARTERS
SUITE 3A01, LEVEL 3A, PJ TOWER
AMCORP TRADE CENTRE, 18 PESIARAN BARAT
46050 PETALING JAYA, SELANGOR

OVERVIEW
➢ The programme is a refresher course on rubber, commencing from nursery practices through the exploitation of the crop.
➢ Estate practices with regard to rubber have been long forgotten by most older planters and probably unheard of by young planters as large plantation groups have moved away from this crop, for Oil Palm (OP).
➢ Owing to over-dependency on a single crop, viz OP, some plantation companies have returned to rubber as a form of minor diversification, especially when the environment is deemed less favorable to OP. The latter include steep terrain and prolonged climatic dry spells.
➢ The topics covered would provide participants with much information on the choice of clones with regard to climatic conditions, practical issues related to the preparation of nursery materials, good field planting practices, disease control, nutrition, and suitable exploitation systems for clones.
