OVERVIEW AND OBJECTIVE
The planting industry in Malaysia was dominated by rubber since 1900 and around 1960 onwards massive expansion of oil paIm had taken place. In recent years crude oil palm oil (CPO) price has plunged to Iow IeveI triggering the industry players and the government to explore the cultivation of other suitable crops to cushion fall in commodity prices.
-> Gaharu or agarwood (AquiIaria) can be a good choice in an eVort for crop diversiłcation. This plant is native to Southeast Asia. commercial planting on smaII scale only began in 2000 to 200t in MaIaysia. Other than pIanting in gentIe unduIating terrains, this crop can be planted in hilly terrains for maximization of Iand use as experience has shown this pIant thrive weII in hiIIy areas too.
Development and inocuIation costs for gaharu are huge but it pays back with high return of investment (ROI) per unit of Iand. Gaharu venturing requires speciaI expertise in certain speciłc areas nameIy vegetative, tissue cuIture propagation and inocuIa- tion of mature tree for resin forming. Therefore, it is essentiaI that personneI invoIved in undertaking this project shouId acquire the necessary knowIedge and skiIIs before undertaking this project.
